Photographing Zion in the fall

October 15, 2009

Late October into early November — fewer people, milder days, and the color that makes Zion the trip I would take first.

I feel the best time to visit Zion is in the fall. You do not have the crowds, and the temperature is mild — warm to cool days, cool to cold nights. In summer the canyon can run 105 to 108°F. That is a photograph too. It is not the one I would plan a trip around if I could choose.

Autumn usually starts the last week of October to the first week of November, depending on the year. If conditions are right the colors can be fantastic. The best parts of the park are still on the trails. Bring a good pair of hiking shoes and use them.

Where this sits with the portfolio

The Zion page is the lander for this work — the portfolio, the prints, and a way into the full shop category when it is loaded. This note is the longer walk through why I keep going back in the fall. The Narrows have their own story: The Narrows in Zion.

Zion sits between Bryce to the northeast and the North Rim to the south. If you are already in this part of the Colorado Plateau, Bryce and the Grand Canyon are not far on the map, and they are different light.
