Grand Canyon — North Rim

This body of work is mainly from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. It was shot over five years. Many of the viewpoints are outside the park in the Kaibab National Forest. You can reach a number of them in a car if you do not mind twenty-plus miles of dirt. Others want a high-clearance vehicle, and in monsoon season I would recommend a 4×4 to get through the mud. At some of these points you can camp on the edge of the canyon.

The best season is the monsoon, about July through September. Elevation is 8,000 to 9,000 feet, so even in summer it is cool. Fall can be spectacular — late September into October. Aspens go yellow, and with enough rain some turn orange or red among the conifers. There are only a few viewpoints where you see color and the canyon in the same frame. Those are worth the drive.

I have gone back to the same dirt spurs until the monsoon puts a sky over the rim, or until the aspens and the canyon show in one frame. Morning at Cape Royal is one of those places. Walhalla Overlook is another. Those two walks are in the journal because they are a morning, not a map.

Zion is the other high-country neighbor. If you want the forest without standing on the rim, a lot of the fall color is still the Kaibab — and it lives on this page. The prints are below; the full set is on the Grand Canyon collection.
