Sonoran Desert

The Sonoran Desert is mainly southern Arizona and northern Mexico. On average it receives about seven inches of rain a year. What makes it lush compared with other deserts is that it has two rainy seasons: a gentle winter rain that lasts, and a summer monsoon that arrives fast and leaves fast. Most deserts get one.

When the winter and early spring rains have been abundant, the desert is a green carpet with wildflowers in the spring. That tends to happen once every five to ten years. From about October to April the weather is as close to perfect as this country gets. This portfolio is that desert — the lush years and the ordinary ones. I have only started in earnest. There will be more.
